Welcome

Welcome to Kindergarten Kuteness.  My name is Jacqueline Perucki and I am a first year kindergarten teacher!  I have been in a kindergarten classroom for the past three years, but this is my first year having my own classroom.  It has been such a wonder experience so far.  In this blog I am going to share with you lessons I have been doing with my class that I have found to be wonderful!  I hope that you find my lessons and activities to be helpful.

Easter Bunny Craftivity

Since Easter is coming up this Sunday, my class started talking about Easter bunnies.  We read the story the Easter Bunny's Assistant.  In the story the Easter Bunny's assistant was skunk and every time the skunk got excited he would spray his smell.  As a writing assignment the students were asked who would make a better assistant for the Easter Bunny.  They came up with really creative ideas such as themselves, a bird, a chick, and a few dogs.  We then decided to make an bunny craftivity.
This was the example that we worked from.

The supplies that we used were cotton balls as the tail, pink foam circles for the cheeks, pom poms for the nose, foam pieces for the whiskers, a white paper bag for the head and body, and googly eyes for the eyes.
As a spring gift each student was given carrot seeds to plan in their gardens.  They were told that they can grow them so when the Easter Bunny comes next year they will have a carrot to leave for him that they grew themselves.  They were also given a container of carrot shaped bubbles.  It was definetly a fun project to do right before our Spring party and Spring break!

Happy Easter to all!

Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the _______!

This week my kindergarten students are doing an author study on Mo Willems.  We are learning about dialogue and today we read the story Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.

If you have every heard of Mo Willems you know his pigeon stories always have our main character the Pigeon asking for something he shouldn't have.  The theme is this story is he is asking to drive a bus.  We all know a pigeon can't drive the bus!  In this story it has student interaction with them responding "NO!" to all the still questions from the Pigeon.  After the story the students were asked to think of another thing the pigeon should not drive.  The prompt was "Don't let the pigeon drive the ____________!"  I found this really cute paper to help them with their ideas. Here are a few examples of my students ideas:

Don't let the pigeon drive the jet!

Don't let the pigeon drive the motorcycle!

Don't let the pigeon drive the car!

After they were done coming up with their creative ideas on what NOT to let the pigeon drive, we moved on to the next part of our lesson.  We were then doing to create the pigeon.  Each student was first given a photo copied picture of the pigeon on blue paper.  They were allowed to decorate however they wanted to.  After they were done creating their pigeon, the students had to cut him out.  The next step was copying their writing of "don't let the pigeon drive the ________!" into a speech bubble.  They did an amazing job!  When they were all done copying and cutting our their work, I gave them a large piece of paper to glue on their pieces.  Here are a few finished products:

3D shape bingo

Over the past week my students have been learning about 3D shapes.  Today as a little review we decided to play a game of 3D bingo.  I came up with the idea of making a shape museum, and they had to help me put the museum together by identifying and separating the shapes.  While we were doing that, they were filling out their bingo boards.  Each student was given a bingo board and a bag of markers.  The bag of markers were also all 3D shapes.
For cones we used Bugles, spheres were gumballs, cylinders were marshmallows, and cubes were caramels.
As I pulled out the objects that went into the museum the students named them and placed the appropriate marker on their board.  At the end of the game, all the students got bingo at the same time.  Here is a final product of what our museum looked like.
Our sphere exhibit made up of an orange, a globe, a beach ball, a balloon, a baseball, yarn, a holiday ornament, marbles, and Kix cereal.

Our cone exhibit made up of a witches hat, a glass, orange cones, air freshener, a birthday hat, a funnel, a carrot shaped jar, and an ice cream cone.

Our cylinder exhibit made up of a water bottle, a roll of toilet paper, a can of string beans, and an empty paper towel roll.

Our cube exhibit made up of a photo cube, a Rubix cube, a tissue box holder, and a candle box.

After we were done putting the museum together the students were allowed to walk around and see all the new 3D exhibits!  They had a great time and were all given the prize of a pencil with a 3D animal eraser on top!  It was a fun and interactive way of learning and reviewing our 3D shapes.
